My friend, working as a stock market analyst for a leading Investment bank in China sent me these pictures. They were taken in a job fair held in China earlier this year. Its hard to believe that a country, which is the fastest growing economy in the world and who’s stock markets are making new highs every year, has its citizens desparately flocking to such job fairs. This suggests that, even though China may tip USA as the largest economy in the world, in a few years time, the standard of living of the citizens of China is still likely to be lower than most American and European countries.

I have a little stat I keep called the trinket index!
At any given job fair, the higher the number of worthless trinkets handed out, and the more worthless the trinkets the FEWER actual jobs available there. And Vis-versa!
I have collected so many useless job fair trinkets over the years, I’ve thought about buying an old bus, converting it to a rolling museum of job fair trinkets and touring the US.
I’d be interested to know the trinket index of THAT job fair!

The photo and commentary lack any context.
Having attended many of these job fairs, I can tell you that your perception of what you see in the photo are wrong.
You must consider:
The time of day when the photo was taken
The location of the Job fair
The nature of the job fair…was it for recent grads only or for agricultural workers?
Was it sponsored by the government or by private companies?
Did local colleges and universities make attendance mandatory for seniors?
Did the job fair occur on a Weekend or other public holiday?
Taking a photo of Grand Central Station in New York at 10:00 a.m. on a Sunday Morning in February can be captioned or interpreted in a way to suggest that train travel is on the decline. Take a photo on a Monday Morning on a Summer day at 8:00 A.m. and you would surmise that train travel is on the increase.
A photo interpretation such as that here is meaningless. The analysis is shocking in the level of ignorance it shows about China and the lack of any real data to back up
any conclusion reached.
what it shows is desire, initiative, ambition, pent up demand… it means that whoever gets hired will work their butt off, whoever doesnt get hired will start a business, and in about ten years the west will be begging for a look in…

The EU is larger then the US already, so China might tip the balance against the US - but they will not be the largest economy in the world if they don’t tip it against the EU.

This only shows that there are just too many fucking humans on the goddamn planet.
And this in China. China, where girls were customary drowned because you know, if it’s a girl, she’s worthless, right?
Why will all these Chinese be working so hard: because they’re not getting laid anyway, they need to make a lot of money to get themselves a wife. And apparently the up and coming Chinese women aren’t all that keen on getting a hubby, they’re busy making money too.
And to all of you who think that China is going to be the top of the hill, consider this: the hill is a dung heap. No environmental protection, rampant corruption, 1/6 of the world’s supply of humans, 1/8 of the world’s supply of fresh water [which they pollute like there’s no tomorrow].

thousands of unemployedyouths milling around, anxious to work for next to nothing is what I see in this photo. As such, its the corporatist’s wet dream, made real. Each moment like this drives the chinese standard of living a little bit lower. Since our societies are now inextricably connected, when their standard of living is ratched down, so is ours. American workers! You are competing for jobs with these people! I would like to propose a solution: stop electing the corporatist party into power (the Republicans).

And soon China will be bigger than the EU. Not much growth or research in the EU that would generate the kind of new markets that could match China’s sheer number of potentially skilled laborers. People are a countries greatest resource, and the US is still importing the best people.

Sorry lad, this is absolutely untrue, USA is still the biggest economy of the world and China lives on US consumers.
India is probably more apt to become stronger then China and dominate plenty of markets.

A lot of other little Pacific Rim countries are doing a fantastic job of earning away world business away from China. Vietnam is a good example.
Dont just look at the local stories…Look at the brighter side…foreigners working in China are generally having a good deal and enjoying life there….
I dont agree with the picture
I prefer other lifestyle, at least, I prefer to have space to build a flat, money to pay it, and being requested for a job instead of having to find it … But unfortunately not everybody can do it. I moved to another country to be able to live as I want. In my country the politicians suck, and there is no way to fix it. I hope to be lucky abroad.
I’m guessing there was a lot of groping (male on female), since they’re packed so tight.
China has a long way to go to surpass the United States in living standards. The current per capita income level is $7,800, compared with $43,800 in the United States. Keep in mind that that includes maybe 600 million peasants with per capita annual incomes under $1000, although the average is raised by the richer people in cities like Shanghai, where incomes might be above $10,000 annually.
A picture tell a thousand words however it may not be what exactly happening . This is called structural unemployment ,talent mismatch . Almost all expatriates whom I have interviewed in the past were so eager to get back to China to work after losing their job. Do you know why ? It is a paradise for capable man .
Both India and China are emerging and both have their unique set of problem . They will excel in their own way at their own pace but never under estimate them . turtle could win a race against hare . Be hamble and be humility . China does depending on the export to America however be informed that it is only 20 % of their export is channeling to your country . If they could survive without having to export to America in the past before the country open up they could survivie again ;on the contrary I am worry that American may not be able to produce the essencial items for themselves .
Use your brains people. With billions of population, i think would be an appropriate scene. I think the people in the photos only represent 0.00001% of the job seekers in China an possibly could only fill up 0.00000001% of the job vacancies in China. Both the economy and populations of China are expanding, and this kind of scene are EXPECTED. Remember, China’s edge in the international market is “abundant cheap manpower”.
Of course, it would have been scary if this photos are taken in Brunei (population: 400,000) where job opportunity are mostly available only in the government and Brunei Shell and manufacturing industry are almost non-existence.
When will the world wake up and acknowledge we’re already over populated? The world needs less people on it not more…everybody stop all the fucking in 3…2….1….NOW.
I hope you’re not an analyst - because your analysis of China’s economy and what a country experiencing massive growth would look like are completely retarded. Get a clue.
Think of how fast the economy is growing there- and then we can wish we had that here as most of our guys are being downsized (i work in recruiting in this field-and it is ugly) - that could mean promise for such a booming economy - as in once upon a time the US had that - no longer.

Don’t agree with you here, jm… here I am in China and most of the foreigners around are lousy dross that will never make it in their own countries… here they are exploiting the fact that they are foreign (and ’special’)… some of them teach English…. (based on their looks, not merit) a whole lot of them has really POOR English… I pity the locals… who pay the top dollars (local terms) to send their kids to these consters.
Other than that… you have the merchandising businessmen who come here to make purchases… or the top dogs who come here for meetings… or to set up plants here…. .
I was here myself to invest in an opportunity…. and lo and behold… some Chinese people are just not to be trusted. However… there is a silver lining out of all these misfortune…. there ARE some Chinese people who will go all out to help too, without strings attached.
Just takes all sorts to make up this place we call earth.
I can’t believe the amount of people! I wondered if any got a quality interview or chat time.
